Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate and analyze images created about ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) in Swedish newspapers, with a critical discourse analysis and to address the stigma that exists before and / or after the diagnose. To structure the articles we divided and categorized the texts in fields of Nature of the problem, Causes, Consequences and scope, history and development, Solutions, Actors, Illustrations and examples. We used a critical discourse analysis to highlight the central discourses in the articles. We came to the conclusion that there were two different discourses that appeared in the material, those discourses were “understanding” and “stigma”. According to the proponents of the neuropsychiatric approach stigma is reinforced by people who doesn’t recognize ADHD as a diagnose. The proponents who emphasize the environmental perspective see the lack of understanding of the person’s, individuality and characteristics as associated with stigma. Was it the diagnosis which made the stigma worse, or was it the incomprehension of the diagnosis? (Less)
