- The voice of the heart – working with feelings, impulses and reactions in vocal pedagogics
The singer and writer Thomas Hemsley believes that singing starts as a wish to express emotions through music. He considers singing to be a form of communication and believes singers should always keep this in mind when they make singing exercises and repertoire. Hemsley’s opinion about singing forms the basis of this essay’s primary purpose: to study how singing teachers develop their students’ vocal techniques through practical work with the students’ expression and interpretation. The singer and writer Thomas Hemsley believes that singing starts as a wish to express emotions through music. He considers singing to be a form of communication and believes singers should always keep this in mind when they make singing exercises and repertoire. Hemsley’s opinion about singing forms the basis of this essay’s primary purpose: to study how singing teachers develop their students’ vocal techniques through practical work with the students’ expression and interpretation. The purpose also includes a better understanding of how different teachers involve feelings and reactions in singing, as well as to analyze how they work to raise awareness in natural functions of emotions and expressions. In the theoretical chapter Hemsley’s thoughts on singing are reported and compared to those of two other singing teachers. A closer description is given of what Hemsley means is the raw material of singing: impulse and intention. This description is compared to other theories dealing with the same subject. The present study was based on interviews with three singing teachers, as well as observations of their teaching. The results provide practical examples of how three singing teachers use emotions and expressions to develop vocal technique. Föreliggande studie har baserats på intervjuer av tre sångpedagoger samt observationer av deras undervisning. Resultatet ger praktiska exempel på hur tre sångpedagoger använder känslor och uttryck för att
utveckla sångteknik. Detta gjorde man genom liknelser och beskrivningar för att stimulera elevers fantasi att hitta naturliga reaktioner att reagera på som föregick sången. Sångpedagogerna menade att medvetandegöra dessa funktioner handlade om att eleven i första hand skulle få en fysisk upplevelse av dem. (Less)
