Abstract
The aim of this study is to assess if it is environmentally justified to use ashes from district heat production for construction of industrial surfaces. Today around 60% of the ashes are used to cover landfills. The need for this will disappear within 15 year, when all landfills are covered. To avoid that the ashes subsequently end up in landfill themself, we need to find new uses for it. This thesis analyses if cement mixed ash can be used for construction in an environmentally sound way.

The results show that the studied type of ash constructions will contain relatively high metal concentrations. However, the leachate concentrations are significantly lower than the total metal concentrations and are generally below the limit for leachate from inert waste. Leaching volumes are also expected to be small because the structural parameters show that the ash-cement blend is a dense and strong material. The conclusion is therefore that the use of ash in this way gives only a small risk of contamination and at the same time the use of virgin materials can be reduced. It is therefore environmentally justified to use ashes in this way. (Less)
