Abstract
Initially it is determined that the nobility reestablished itself in Lund during the 16th century after being almost non-existent by the time of the protestant reformation. During the 17th century, the presence of nobility was once more reduced.
The reasons for the increased presence after the protestant reformation are analyzed using three main parameters – power, social and economical factors. A multiple sourced method based on the use of archaeological, written and genealogical source material is applied.
Despite the reduced influence of Lund after the protestant reformation, the town kept a regional position of power that appears to have attracted Scanian high nobility with manors in more distant parts of the region. The leading... (More)

Despite the reduced influence of Lund after the protestant reformation, the town kept a regional position of power that appears to have attracted Scanian high nobility with manors in more distant parts of the region. The leading officials of the institutions of power had in several cases houses in the town.
Lund, with a lingering prestige mainly represented by the cathedral, formed a desired arena for the high nobility’s ideologically-based status-improving consumption. Materially it was expressed by fine houses and grand tombstones in the cathedral. Most likely, a suitable social life was developed in the town.
The economical factors appear to have been of less importance. Lund was not an important market for the nobility’s manorial produce. Neither do urban real estates appear to have been important for the nobility as investment objects. (Less)
