Abstract
This Master’s thesis consists of a qualitative case-study of the ideas of the public library expressed in politicians, librarians and users descriptions of the public library in general and specifically Klostergårdens library. Klostergårdens library is a branch library in Lund that has been reestablished in cooperation with a local youth center in a newly constructed building. We argue that when establishing a new library, questions and ideas regarding the library’s functions are put into focus. We study the similarities and differences between the groups’ descriptions and how diverging ideas can affect Klostergårdens library’s development and role in the local community. In view of our aim, we have formulated questions regarding the roles... (More)
This Master’s thesis consists of a qualitative case-study of the ideas of the public library expressed in politicians, librarians and users descriptions of the public library in general and specifically Klostergårdens library. In view of our aim, we have formulated questions regarding the roles of the public library, participation and the library’s role in the local community.

We have carried out interviews and we have also observed and participated during the opening ceremonies of the library. Our analysis is based on Anderssons and Skot-Hansens model of the public library’s main functions, Audunsons theory about the high and low intensive meeting place and finally Hvenegaard-Rasmussen, Jochumsen and Skot-Hansens model of the public library’s role in urban development.

Our results show that the descriptions made by politicians and librarians are similar, whereas the users’ descriptions diverge from the others. Users seem to have a traditional image of the library, they stress that they want to be able to sit in peace and quiet and that books and personal service are the most important features. In addition to books, the politicians and librarians stress a more multifunctional library, with activities and meeting places. The democratic role is stressed by all groups and everyone think that participation in the development of the library is important, though the meaning of the concept and what it should lead to differs. The politicians and librarians ascribe the library and it’s cooperation with the local youth center more importance compared to the users, but all groups think the library will revitalize the local community.
