Abstract
The future of our society is in need of changes to survive. Our cities are not sustainable the way they are today, nor the way we consume our resources. For those reasons, sustainable development has become fashion today. Eco-cities are being built all over the world to find new solutions to problems we face every day, such as too much traffic and waste. The topic for this master thesis is who initiates eco-cities and what the incentives are for this. Västra hamnen in Malmö, Sweden, and Tianjin Eco-city in China are the two examples for the study. The initiators and incentives were compared and contrasted to see if they were similar even though the areas are in completely different parts of the world. As it was not possible to do... (More)

The initiators and incentives were compared and contrasted to see if they were similar even though the areas are in completely different parts of the world. As it was not possible to do field-studies in China the method for the essay was a literature study with a comparative approach. Neoliberalism has had a great impact on both Malmö and China and was seen as an appropriate choice of frame work together with urbanization and sustainable development. The conclusion was that the incentives were quite similar, but the initiators were not. (Less)
