Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
The purpose of this essay is to examine how enterprises work towards greater gender equality and how they report about their work. It also aims to analyze why enterprises choose to compile these activities and measurements into official reports. In order to answer the questions asked in the essay, both primary and secondary data has been used. A qualitative survey has been conducted, where the authors have been examining the sustainability reports of ten enterprises from different industries in Sweden. The information gathered from the reports have been compared and complemented with information collected through interviews with the same ten companies. In the discussion, the authors have been trying to explain the enterprises’ patterns of activities made towards greater gender equality and their motives behind the reporting. This has been made through theories comprising social constructivism, business reporting, legitimacy and arguments for and against legal regulation. The results from the survey illustrate a variety of both internal and external activities between the enterprises. When explained through social constructivism and previous research, the authors draw the conclusion that the activities must influence and change the deeper norms and beliefs of each individual, if achieving greater gender equality. The discussion explains further which of the activities that lead to greater gender equality and which do not. The essay is written with the assumption that a company exists within a wider context, where parties mutually influence each other. This implies that the entity will need legitimacy from the stakeholders to be able to continue its business. Research indicate that enterprises choose to report on their social responsibility to a greater extent than before even though this activity is yet not mandatory by law. This trend follows society’s increased interest in the subject. This leads to the conclusion that the enterpises’ motives behind compiling their work towards greater gender equality in official reports is strongly connected to their essential needs to create legitimacy.
