Abstract
An extensive part of the Swedish roads are low-traffic roads, which are not properly constructed and thus lack the necessary bearing capacity. The Swedish Transport Administration has a limited budget each year that is used to fix the roads with the comprehensive needs. Therefore, it is important to be able to make a quick inventory of the existing damages in order to make road maintenance more cost efficient and to address the maintenance where it is most needed.
The issue was answered by a study of various literatures and by studying the construction of two different roads in Kronoberg county, which was monitored by surveying the damages on the finished reconstruction. The mapping of damages was carried out with FWD, "Bära eller... (More)

The issue was answered by a study of various literatures and by studying the construction of two different roads in Kronoberg county, which was monitored by surveying the damages on the finished reconstruction. The mapping of damages was carried out with FWD, "Bära eller brista", digging of test pits and analysing data from PMSv3.
It is noted that there is two ways to solve the problem of lacking bearing capacity in a road; through direct and non-direct methods. With direct methods, the problem is fixed by reconstruction of the road, and with non-direct methods by using non-direct interventions.
One of the main reason that pavements deteriorate and that the deterioration process accelerates with time is the presence of water in the road structure. Furthermore, it was found that it is more cost efficient to implement small-scale interventions continuously instead of implementing a more comprehensive measure when the road is completely destroyed.
