Abstract
Over the past twenty years, the metal detector has received considerable attention, both from archaeologists, private persons and media, among other things because of problems with crimes related to archaeological heritage. Archaeologists have long pursued a hot debate on the regulations that are in force in Sweden concerning the use of the metal detectors. Comparisons with Danish regulations - which differ from the Swedish - have been included in the debate, since the Danish regulations are considered to reflect a more liberal approach to the use of metal detectors. In this essay, I discuss the pros and cons about the consequences of the different regulatory frameworks. The questions that I’m discuss are: How is the metal detector in... (More)

Comparisons with Danish regulations - which differ from the Swedish - have been included in the debate, since the Danish regulations are considered to reflect a more liberal approach to the use of metal detectors. In this essay, I discuss the pros and cons about the consequences of the different regulatory frameworks. The questions that I’m discuss are: How is the metal detector in connection with archaeological investigations in Sweden and Denmark? Does the discoveries of metal artifacts between Sweden and Denmark differ because of their different use of the metal detector? What types of places are discovered and not discovered? What would the consequences be of a change of the Swedish regulatory framework to become more like Denmark’s? And last, would it frame the knowledge in the archaeological investigations or would it involve any adverse consequences? The study has shown that there are different arguments about pros and cons with the both regulations, but there is strong arguments for a liberalization of the Swedish regulation. (Less)
