Abstract
The aim of this bachelor thesis is to study the contradiction between planing both a dense and green city. This contradiction can be explained as a conflict of space, where green areas are deprioritized and replaced with buildings and streets. Further on this thesis aims to examine how pocket parks can be used to alleviate this contradiction and achieve sustainable development in planing for a dense area. The study is based on a qualitative case study on the area Norra Sorgenfri in Malmö. Norra Sorgenfri is part of a densification planning program in Malmö but also is described as an area with a lack of green space. The study analysis tensions involved in planning for a both green and dense Norra Sorgenfri. The analysis based on data... (More)

The analysis based on data collected from two semistructured interviews and analysis of four planning documents shows how pocket parks can be used as a green space to implement green values in the dense urban environment planned for Norra Sorgenfri. Pocket parks requires small areas and hold restorative affects and important values that increase the quality of life and support sustainable development. In conclusion, pocket parks provide means to achieve sustainable urban development by alleviating tensions between the needs for green spaces and for levels of density associated with sustainable development.
