- Abstract
- The aim of this study is to investigate human behavior during the pre-movement phase of building evacuation and determine how pre-movement time varies between different building types and types of alarms. Unannounced videorecorded evacuation experiments from earlier studies were examined, which resulted in 2 486 individual pre-movement times divided amongst six different building types. The parts of pre-movement, recognition and response, were also quantified. From these observations, statistical distributions were determined in order to represent the variation of pre-movement times. Data from the recordings were most commonly fitted to lognormal and log-logistic distributions, which leads to the conclusion that pre-movement time follow... (More)

From these observations, statistical distributions were determined in order to represent the variation of pre-movement times. Data from the recordings were most commonly fitted to lognormal and log-logistic distributions, which leads to the conclusion that pre-movement time follow distributions that are rapidly increasing, followed by a less steep, extended decrease. Further, the results were compared with existing Swedish building code regulations regarding performance based design. Through this comparison, it was found that some of the proposed pre-movement times were exceeded. However, the data for some of the building types were scarce and more evacuation drills must be studied in order to obtain results that are more accurate. (Less)
