Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to highlight what makes a good bicycle infrastructure with the goal to increase bicycling in urban areas. The focus has been to evaluate the bicycle infrastructure in the city of Lund, by investigating the differences between the main bicycle routes and the regular bicycle network in the city.

A literature review of both scientific literature and bicycle planning manuals formed the basis of an inventory of parts of the bicycle network, both the main and the regular network. This inventory showed that there were very few differences between the bicycle routes, which was also confirmed in an interview study with traffic planners at the municipality of Lund. The only aspect that distinguished the main bicycle routes was the coloured guiding system along the routes, their radial direction and the fact that they originate from the 1970s, which makes them a part of Lunds bicycle history. The conclusion of the study is that the way the main bicycle routes is designed, they do not meet the criteria for being a main bicycle network and should therefore not be called one. (Less)
