Abstract
The aim of this study was to interpret and understand preschool teachers’ perspective of their duty to report maltreated children to the social services. Four focus groups at four different preschools were used for the study. From the interviews, different themes were identified as important for the preschool teachers’. These themes were responsibility, consequences, excuses and priority. The analyses were based on two theories, one about responsibility and different roles by Bauman and the other one about how people explain their behaviour with excuses and justifications by Scott and Lyman. The preschool teachers explained that the duty to report is a given part of their profession but that there are some big issues with reporting. The... (More)
The aim of this study was to interpret and understand preschool teachers’ perspective of their duty to report maltreated children to the social services. The study shows that preschool teachers need more support and feedback from the social services, that the responsibility of having their own name on the report is a burden, that it’s hard to report families that they have a relationship with and that a report to the social services can affect their personal lives. To conclude it appears as the mandatory reporting of maltreated children to the social services needs to be developed and more adjusted for the preschool teachers. (Less)
