Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between stress and insomnia respectively, and satisfaction and frustration of the psychological needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness, as defined within Self-determination Theory. 371 elementary and high school teachers in southern Sweden participated in an online survey. A Swedish version of Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction Need Frustration Scale - Work Domain (BPNSFS) was developed and validated. Stress and insomnia were measured with Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). Correlation analysis and hierarchical multiple regressions were used to analyze the data. The results showed significant correlations between satisfaction and frustration of all three needs and stress and insomnia respectively. Frustration and satisfaction of the needs explained 23% of the variance in insomnia and, together with gender and work experience, 48% in stress. Autonomy had the greatest influence on stress and insomnia. Need frustration had greater explanatory value than need satisfaction. The study contributed with new knowledge about the relationships between psychological needs, stress and insomnia. Furthermore it adds to existing research on need frustration with a study in a Swedish context. (Less)
