- Abstract
- This case study seeks to contribute to an ongoing discussion about planning for a sense of community by exploring which approach is used by the municipality of Linköping when planning for the neighbourhood Vallastaden. Vallastaden is presented as a neighbourhood planned to create meetings and a local sense of community. However, in times of increased mobility and digitalisation, this local scale of the community is being disputed.

Vallastaden is presented as a neighbourhood planned to create meetings and a local sense of community. However, in times of increased mobility and digitalisation, this local scale of the community is being disputed.
The study investigates which planning solutions are described to increase social contacts and which understanding of the local community that is present in planning documents for Vallastaden. I have thereby answered the research question: Is it possible to plan an urban neighbourhood to create a locally anchored community and how does the planning action in Vallastaden try to achieve this?
A qualitative content analysis of planning documents has been conducted, contextualised in the background of a planning discourse concerned with personal meetings. By using a theoretical framework based on three perspectives: the lost community, the saved community and the liberated community, the study finds that the planning activity in Vallastaden is based on a belief that planning can increase possibilities for a local community through a densely built structure and common areas. The study though highlights the importance of reflection on theoretical assumptions made when planning for a locally anchored community. (Less)
