Despite a generally increasing quality of life over time, a disparity of life quality between groups of different socioeconomic status is becoming more apparent. Signs of this can be seen in differences in life expectancy which, together with health issues, are closely linked to social sustainability and thus also to sustainable development. A strategy to achieve growth, which is a goal for most cities, is creating and marketing a positive image of the city. Malmö is an example of a city combating increasing gaps amongst its inhabitants, and the city is using an image of sustainability in order to rebrand itself. The research questions are; How is the city of Malmö working to achieve social sustainability? In what way is Malmö using social sustainability to create an attractive and competitive city? These questions have been researched through the study of planning documents and local politicians’ views on the development of the city have been noted. By using a theoretical framework on sustainability, social sustainability and interurban competition, the results found in the surveyed documents were analyzed and a conclusion reached. Namely, that there is an increasing awareness of the importance of questions related to social sustainability and that sustainability has in many ways come to symbolize and put Malmö on the map, on both a more local and on the international market.
