Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

Abstract
This study aims to deepen the knowledge of how students reflect on their future career choices. The students all attend a high school program with special focus on classical music on an intermediate or advanced level. The purpose of this study is also to map the opinions of the students concerning musicianship and career choices, as well as determine which factors have contributed to them continuing their music making. The study has both a qualitative and quantitative focus, through a questionnaire study and follow-up focus group interviews. The study contains relevant literature about background and education capital, identity development, motives for choice of education and working status. The results of the questionnaire show that 78%... (More)
This study aims to deepen the knowledge of how students reflect on their future career choices. The results of the questionnaire show that 78% of the students wish to continue studying music, and a predominantly large group has a positive attitude towards applying to a music performance program. However, in comparison the attitude towards applying to a music teaching program was overall negative. The students’ perceptions of the two professions and its different forms of education, such as status, characteristics, work opportunities and pros and cons are described in the results and interact with the factors of what the students believe influence their choice of education. According to the students these factors are a combination of family background, social circle, instrumental teacher and cultural environment. A comparison is then made with the literature and the results of the study. This discusses the school culture, social groups and the identity development of teenagers and how this interacts with their choice of future education after high school. (Less)
