Purpose: We aim to investigate how leadership is understood by the members of the flat – structured organizations, more specifically startups, in order to get a deeper understanding of leadership processes in flat structured companies including how different leadership styles can interact with each other in the context of startups.
Methodology: A qualitative study has been conducted using semi-structured interviews with the representatives of the startup. The thesis uses a social constructionist and an interpretative approach.
Theoretical perspectives: The theoretical framework is divided into two sections. The first section contains classic leadership concepts including the trait approach and the situational approach along with Vertical leadership (VL). The second section contains a review of Entrepreneurial and Shared Leadership.
Empirical foundation: The empirical data consists of semi-structured interviews with the members of a startup.
Conclusions: Empirical findings suggested that EL, SL and VL can be used within one company in order to increase cooperation, effectiveness and comfort at work. Besides, the empirical findings pointed towards an avenue to combine entrepreneurial and shared leadership, generating entrepreneurial shared leadership (ESL), which is defined as an influence process within a startup stemming from an entrepreneurial leader with an emphasis on entrepreneurial activity in an uncertain business environment, including seeking and exploiting opportunities, and at the same time promoting team members to take the role of leaders in situations where they have a unique competence.
