Abstract (Swedish)
The aim of this thesis is to explore how young Swedes’ news habits and trust in the news media differ from the rest of the Swedish population. For this purpose we surveyed 134 high school students and compared the results with data from the 2019 edition of the Digital News Report, published by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. We found that young Swedes’ news consumption for the most part takes place in the digital realm where social media platforms dominate as the most prominent news providers. Media trust is a lot higher among the surveyed students than in the general population. Despite this, the students also suggest that journalists’ political views influence their reporting and that the news media doesn’t provide a fair reflection of society which challenges the objectivity ideal that has reigned supreme in Swedish media for a long time and provides an interesting starting point for future research.
