Abstract
The clothing industry has a great impact on the environment, and it is a big contributor to carbon dioxide emissions. The over consumption of clothes in the world leads to lots of clothing being thrown away every year. Sharing economy initiatives have come up recently and its popularity has grown. The idea is that instead of buying everything, we can borrow, rent and exchange with one another. This study is focusing on one initiative, which is a clothes swapping store in Malmö, Sweden and investigates “swappers” perception of exchanging clothes and the sharing economy and if they also tend to use other Sharing economies. The dissertation also asks the question if there is a possibility of the phenomenon spreading.

The dissertation also asks the question if there is a possibility of the phenomenon spreading.

To answer the research questions four qualitative interviews with individuals using the clothes exchanging model, and the owner of the clothes exchange store in Malmö were conducted. The interviews showed similarities in the perceptions of participants. They were all interested in, and positive to the idea of a sharing / exchanging community and would like to borrow and exchange more. The participants were also concerned about the impact the clothing industry has on the environment, and it was a big reason for them to start swapping. The results also show a possibility of the sharing economy ideas spreading. (Less)
