Abstract
This paper investigates whether the Blekinge Region in the south-east of Sweden has the prerequisites to adopt a polycentric regional strategy. The Region is facing challenges when it comes to unemployment and dependency ratios with growing numbers of elderly. A possible solution to this could be adopting a regional strategy that would widen the regions labour market areas through a polycentric regional strategy. The paper investigates if a polycentric strategy is possible by using three different methods. The regions five biggest cities are ranked through the rank size distribution to determine if the region is leaning towards a more hierarchical or complementary polycentricity, alternatively if it leans towards a more monocentric city... The regions five biggest cities are ranked through the rank size distribution to determine if the region is leaning towards a more hierarchical or complementary polycentricity, alternatively if it leans towards a more monocentric city structure. Additionally, an analysis of documents from the Blekinge Region and its municipalities is carried out together with an interview with an urban planner from the Blekinge Region. The results show that the region leans towards a hierarchical polycentric structure. Furthermore, the overall results show that the region has many of the prerequisites needed to develop in a polycentric manner. The findings also show that the biggest city in the region, Karlskrona, is the best candidate when it comes to acting as the region’s future growth engine. (Less)
