- Abstract (Swedish)
- There is a limited number of studies on the link between employee motivation and internal control systems in order to reach the strategy of an organisation. Neither are there studies researching how the use of incentives differs across sectors. The aim of this study is therefore to analyse and compare how organisations work with employee motivation through internal control systems to fulfil the organisation’s strategy. Moreover, the study analyses whether there is a difference in the use of internal control systems between the private, public and nonprofit sectors.

The aim of this study is therefore to analyse and compare how organisations work with employee motivation through internal control systems to fulfil the organisation’s strategy. Moreover, the study analyses whether there is a difference in the use of internal control systems between the private, public and nonprofit sectors.
To answer the aim of this study, the empirical data was conducted through a series of semi-structured interviews with managers from different organisations. Out of the nine organisations that participated, four were from the private sector, two from the public sector, one from the private/public sector and lastly two were from the nonprofit sector. The participants were interviewed about three main themes: strategy of the organisation, employee motivation and the use of internal control systems in the form of incentives.
The study shows that organisations use employee motivation and incentives to reach the objectives of the organisation. Understanding what motivates employees is essential when designing effective incentive systems to ensure that the incentives motivate employees and drive performance in the direction of the strategy. Non-financial incentives are used across all sectors to foster community ship and develop competence. Financial incentives are used systematically by private sector organisations to appreciate and strengthen behaviours and performance. (Less)
