Teoretiska perspektiv: Det resursbaserade synsättet, stakeholder theory, liability of newness, interorganizational endorsement theory, organizational legitimacy

(Less)

Purpose: The study aims to determine what role incubators fill in generating legitimacy for its startups as well as how the conditions for survival and growth are affected by the legitimacy that the incubator generates.
Methodology: Qualitative study in the form of semi-structured interviews with respondents chosen through a nonprobability sample.
Theoretical perspectives: The resource-based view, stakeholder theory, liability of newness, interorganizational endorsement theory, organizational legitimacy
Empirical foundation: Interviews with 13 representatives holding executive positions at startups affiliated with 7 incubators located throughout Sweden.
Conclusions: The respondents from the startups believe that the affiliation to an incubator contributes to a varying degree in generating legitimacy toward different stakeholders. Financiers have been identified as the stakeholder group that recognizes and values a startups affiliation to an incubator the most. In the cases where the incubator affiliation contributes to generating legitimacy, it can prove beneficial in different ways depending on which stakeholder that recognizes the affiliation. (Less)
