Abstract
Risk perceptions during a current pandemic

At this moment in time (may 2020), Sweden is in the midst of a pandemic by reason of the coronavirus. Folkhälsomyndigheten, the Swedish public health authority, is facing a challenge in communicating about the risk when the general public's perceptions of risk are formed by a variety of factors. The aim of this study has been to contribute to research in the field of risk communication by examining which factors affect the Swedish population's risk perception of the coronavirus during a current pandemic. To achieve the purpose of the study, a quantitative survey study was conducted in which Swedes answered questions about their current perceptions of risk related to the coronavirus based on a... The aim of this study has been to contribute to research in the field of risk communication by examining which factors affect the Swedish population's risk perception of the coronavirus during a current pandemic. To achieve the purpose of the study, a quantitative survey study was conducted in which Swedes answered questions about their current perceptions of risk related to the coronavirus based on a number of factors. These factors were hazard, event outrage, blame outrage and trust. Using a multiple regression analysis, the study found that rational assessments were what primarily shaped how Swedes perceived the coronavirus, while emotional aspects had no significant explanatory power whatsoever. To a certain extent, the result contradicts much of the previous research on risk perceptions. Thus, this study may be of interest to both communication practitioners and organizations communicating about risks. (Less)

(More)
