Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
Digitalisation in compulsory school and society is a fact. In 2017, the government decided on a digitalisation strategy for Sweden and prioritized the school system as one of the key factors. However, the Municipal School of Arts and Music is not included in the digitalisation strategy, and the lack of governance documents within the Municipal School of Arts and Music means that teaching can differ depending on where in the country the teaching is provided.
The purpose of this study is to investigate how flute teachers use digital tools in their instruction, and also to see what prospects the Municipal School of Arts and Music has in regard to digitalisation. In March 2020, the study was given an additional purpose due to COVID-19, and... (More)

The purpose of this study is to investigate how flute teachers use digital tools in their instruction, and also to see what prospects the Municipal School of Arts and Music has in regard to digitalisation. In March 2020, the study was given an additional purpose due to COVID-19, and additionally investigates how COVID-19 affected the Municipal School of Arts and Music that were part of the study. The study was conducted through semi-structured interviews with five flute teachers.

The results show that in flute teaching, digital tools are now used to play backgrounds, listen to music, find sheet music online, using a metronome and tuner, and for the teachers to write their own sheet music. Digital tools are also used for communication between teachers, pupils and caregivers, and to note what has been done during the lessons. Since flute teaching has a tradition going back three hundred years, part of the discussion argues that this tradition is probably a decisive factor as to why digital tools are not used more than stated above. The future of the Municipal School of Arts and Music is governed by the interests of the teachers and principals. Interested teachers and opportunities for further training are required to obtain digitally competent teachers. Thus, the Municipal School of Arts and Music may in the future become more adapted to digitalisation. COVID-19 resulted in two of the Municipal School of Arts and Music in the study switching to online education, and the teachers at these schools then had to use digital tools in new ways. (Less)
