Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore how digitals tools can be used as part of teaching improvisation within an ensemble. The research methods used are experiments that examine five different exercises for improvising within an ensemble context and how they may be developed by the use of digital tools. The experiments have been conducted by us, the writers of this study, and they have been supervised by an observer. Apart from the experiments qualitative interviews have been conducted where our informants are teachers currently employed at Adult Education Centers as ensemble teachers all of whom reside within the pop and rock genres.

Prior research within this field presented within the study defines the digital tools used within the experiments as well as two different pedagogical orientations pertaining to teaching improvisation within an ensemble and the use of digitals tools. The results of the experiments show that digital tools in some cases can aid in performing the exercises we examined, especially the exercises where we with the help of digitals tools could alter the other participants' sound in order to execute the goals of the exercise. The conclusion of our study is that the results point to digital tools affecting the individuals as well as the groups approach to improvisation due to a clear difference regarding creative character, group dynamic as well as how easy and intuitive the execution of the exercise was perceived by us as participants between the acoustic and digitally aided improvisations. The results from the interviews state that our informants mainly use digital tools for the purpose of showing examples of music when referring to teaching an ensemble, as well as documenting and sharing information with students and colleagues. Furthermore we can see from our results that our informants view digital tools as something they would like to use more in their ensemble teaching, but they feel that they currently lack the competence to implement digital tools to a larger degree in their ensemble teaching. Abstract (Swedish)

(More)
