Although the interpretation process of emotional meaning through email communication has been researched through a broad set of theoretical lenses, this particular area of research has not adequately addressed this process of deriving emotional meaning within the scope of the modern multicultural organization. The cultural diversity found in modern global organizations fosters the research inquiry as to how emotional meaning is transmitted via email communication when language proficiency, past interactions, cultural awareness and organizational guidelines are taken into account. Using the interview research approach, this thesis seeks to address these aspects of the email interpretation process. The qualitative nature of this research is intended to provide a foundational understanding of how email communication is used by various individuals from different cultural backgrounds. The findings of this research suggest that language proficiency, past interactions, cultural awareness observed as acts of communication convergence and divergence and organizational guidelines (email netiquette) can affect the amount and intensity of perceived emotional meaning present in email communication. Within the realm of strategic communication, these findings provide relevant insight into how the perceived amount and intensity of emotional meaning can affect work atmosphere, and relationship building via email communication.
