Abstract
Museums have long had an important role as institutions for learning and education. In recent years, the pedagogical role of museums has become more important. Museums can offer a different kind of learning compared to the formal education system, and museums can be important resources for schools. However, as a recent report from The Swedish National Heritage Board shows, many museums are struggling to reach schools. The report also highlights that not all students get the opportunity to visit museums and that schools are not taking advantage of the resources offered by museums. Sveriges historia is a digital learning resource created by museums for middle-school and high-school history education. The purpose of this master´s thesis is to study pedagogical ambitions and perspectives of Sveriges historia though textual analysis of three documents, one interview, and ten online lessons made available through Sveriges historia. Sociocultural theory and Eileen Hooper-Greenhill´s concept of the modernist museum and the post-museum are used to analyse the material. The results show that the primary ambition of Sveriges historia is to be relevant for teachers and students. The focus of the lessons is not the museum objects as such, but rather what can be communicated through them. This is line with the post-museum theory’s emphasis on the usage of collections, rather than on the collections themselves. Furthermore, the results show that the learning taking place through Sveriges historia is not transmission based, but rather based on the ambition that students will have the opportunity to use and appropriate intellectual and physical tools. This master´s thesis also shows that the online lessons can be viewed through sociocultural perspective and that the lessons prioritise reflection over facts. (Less)
