Abstract
The Swedish Government announced that coming fall of 2022 the school curriculum will change significantly in its approach to sexual education to include subjects such as consent, sexuality and relationships, as well as critical conversations about representation of sex in different forms of media, including pornography. To combat children's exposure to porn, child rights activists are calling for porn filters to be installed in every school nationwide. This notion has been met with both support, but also criticism as it infringes on children's right to access information in the public arena. To combat children's exposure to porn, child rights activists are calling for porn filters to be installed in every school nationwide. This notion has been met with both support, but also criticism as it infringes on children's right to access information in the public arena. Installments of porn filters at public schools and the changes in sex education to include information literacy put the nation's school librarians in a complicated situation as educators of media and information literacy. This Master's thesis' aim is to gain knowledge and information from high school librarians in Swedish school libraries on how they work with literature and other media that contains information and perspectives in subjects such as sex, sexuality and relationships. The empirical material was gathered using qualitative interviews with Swedish high school librarians and analyzed the results using neoinstitutionalism as theory. The results show that high school librarians are not particurarly active in sex education, however some do work with media and information literacy in the matter when they discuss literature. Porn filters were a controversial topic and most librarians seemed to be against them due to them blocking sites and essential information, however a couple of librarians argue that filters need to be installed to combat harrasment and ensure students' safety.
