The purpose of this study is to show how status is portrayed in the various homes in the program, and how the home functions as an arena for self-representation. The essay is based on a qualitative text analytical method, which is rooted in the semiotic tradition of interpreting sections from the program. The content is analyzed on the basis of Bourdieu's class and social theory as well as Goffman's theory of self-representation and self-identity.
The essay also discusses Sveriges Television's (SVT) role in the context in terms of whether the actor is involved in advocating or reinforcing ideals and whether the fact that the program is part of a large television production is important for the result. The study shows that homes and interior design can function as a tool for asserting their social status and self-presentation, and that the fact that homes have been studied in the context of a television production has an impact on the result. The study also shows that the home functions as an arena for self-presentation because one has the opportunity to make active choices in highlighting or hiding objects in the home that could lead to a certain perception. Status in the home is depicted through status symbols, which require a recognized economic and social value in order for them to be able to influence an individual's social status. The results also show that the presence of status symbols differs depending on the style and character in which the home is decorated. (Less)
