- Abstract
- With the growing number of migrants, could a populist migrant party succeed in Sweden just like the party Denk in the Netherlands? By applying Akkermans populism scale and the immigrant hypothesis this study strives to begin to answer this question by looking into one of the country’s largest migrant populations: Arab-Swedes. Through a survey (N=333) three aspects are measured (1) How populist are Arab-Swedes? (2) How is their populism expressed? (3) Is there a vacuum in Swedish politics that these attitudes can fill? This study finds that Arab-Swedes are indeed more populist than the average Swedish population, but less than the average eastern and southern European. Their populism is expressed in a socially conservative and globalist... (More)

This study finds that Arab-Swedes are indeed more populist than the average Swedish population, but less than the average eastern and southern European. Their populism is expressed in a socially conservative and globalist way, and they tend to favour the left. Arab-Swedes in more segregated areas are more populist, but time spent in Sweden does not seem to have an effect on their populism levels. This survey finds that there indeed is a vacuum within Swedish politics that a migrant populist party could fill. Furthermore there are a lot of similarities between Arab-Swedes and voters for the migrant party Denk in the Netherlands. Further studies with a larger surveygroup is still needed to corroborate these findings. (Less)
