Abstract
The approach “Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design” (CPTED) is frequently used internationally and is recognised as a well functioning crime prevention approach within urban planning. However, the usage of the approach in a Swedish setting is far more limited and less explored. Thus, this paper aims to further investigate the applicability of CPTED in a Swedish context. The case chosen for the paper is Helsingborg municipality, which is perceived as one of the leading municipalities within crime prevention. Furthermore, this paper strives to create a better understanding of CPTED and explore the challenges as well as the potential of development of the approach. The case chosen for the paper is Helsingborg municipality, which is perceived as one of the leading municipalities within crime prevention. Furthermore, this paper strives to create a better understanding of CPTED and explore the challenges as well as the potential of development of the approach. Two semi structured interviews were conducted where material from three different informants were collected. Additionally, systematic social observations were made in three neighborhoods in Helsingborg in order to visualize the crime preventing measures in the physical environment. The results of the study show that several of the CPTED principles are implemented in the current crime prevention projects in the municipality. CPTED was considered to be a useful tool to create safe spaces, however, it was stated to be lacking in some areas. The informants at Helsingborg municipality claim that CPTED has to develop and improve further to become a fully functioning approach in Swedish urban planning. For example, equality is an aspect that needs to be incorporated to create spaces that are accessible as well as safe to all inhabitants. (Less)
