- Abstract
- The study of how regional and global resources are allocated geographically, the incentives for these trends, and what strategies can be used to prevent adverse effects between economic core areas and peripheral areas, are key themes in economic geography, and of crucial interest in studies of regional development. This paper addresses these issues in light of the relationship between the emerging Scandinavian megaregion and two of its peripheral municipalities – Växjö and Skövde. Supported by theories featuring the notions of regional competitiveness, core-periphery relations and place based leadership, this study aims to answer the questions of how and why the municipalities work with interregional networks to facilitate economic growth... Supported by theories featuring the notions of regional competitiveness, core-periphery relations and place based leadership, this study aims to answer the questions of how and why the municipalities work with interregional networks to facilitate economic growth and innovation in light of the emerging Scandinavian megaregion and; what regional structures precondition the municipalities’ opportunities and need to favour these efforts. The study is carried out by a mixed methods approach employing an analysis of secondary sources, complemented by semi-structured interviews with municipality representatives. The results concluded in observable differences between the municipalities’ regional structures, preconditioning the adoption of different strategies to facilitate economic growth. These were for instance a difference in connectivity, where Skövde kommun appeared to have a higher connectivity to surrounding areas and to the Scandinavian megaregion, resulting in a tendency to adopt strategies to accomodate innovational growth to a higher degree than Växjö. In turn, Växjö tended to direct their efforts to increase connectivity by transport infrastructure. (Less)
