Hur kan avfallshanteringen förbättras bland samordnade verksamheter? - En fallstudie över Malmö Saluhall

- Abstract
- In the next 30 years the world’s population is expected to increase by two billion
people, resulting in a growing demand for natural resources and rising greenhouse gas
emissions. In order to face these challenges, society needs to improve resource
efficiency while producing less waste. In Sweden there is a large amount of waste
originating from the restaurant industry. Previous studies have examined how
individual restaurants can work to improve their waste management, however, few
studies have looked into the waste challenges among market halls and other coexisting
business units, where there is often limited space to accommodate for waste bins. The

aim of this study is to therefore examine how coexisting business units, that share a
common space can improve their waste management. The research was conducted as
a case study of Malmö Saluhall’s waste management, focusing mainly on the trader’s
waste disposal. The methodology consisted of online surveys, participant observations
and interviews with relevant actors in the waste industry and other coexisting
businesses in the market. The results showed that a lot of focus tend to lie on
improving the recycling of materials and slightly less on waste prevention. Other
challenges consisted of creating optimal waste cost allocations between the traders and
implementing suitable waste indicators and key figures. The study also identified
multiple environmental, economic and legal driving forces that should further
encourage Malmö Saluhall to improve their waste management. An important
conclusion is that the implementation of a common waste management plan among
coexisting business units is a continuous process that’s constantly affected by new
legislation and innovations. This means that new aspects in regards to waste
management, should continue to be explored in order to find out which strategies have
the least impact on the environment. (Less) - Popular Abstract (Swedish)

(Less)
