Abstract
With the ambition to contribute to a sustainable development, this project started with aim to recycle fiber boards.
The idea behind the project is to take lose fibers that
come from waste product or simply just worn out fiber boards, and
make them into new fiber boards. In order to achieve this, a
binder is needed to hold the boards together. The aim of this thesis was to evaluate different binders. Different properties of the boards were then evaluated to assess the binders.
In this thesis both liquid and solid binders are evaluated.
The questions that were investigated include:
-Is it possible recycle and reuse fiber boards, by optimizing the binder?
-Is there a significant difference on the environmental impact between

The experiments showed that it is in fact possible to recycle and
reuse fiber boards. The environmental impact is also less for recycled boards. (Less)

The possibility to recycle and reuse fiber boards

The possibility to recycle and reuse fiber boards

The impact of our activity on the environment have resulted in changes,
many of these are damaging changes and as the global population has grown
the demands on the resources of the earth continue to grow. In order to
preserve the environment and keep using the assets, it is important to find
sustainable ways to do so. With the ambition to contribute to a sustainable
development, this project started with aim to recycle fiber boards.
The fiber boards produced are made are made of very light weight material. The
process in which the fiber boards are produced requires a lot of energy, so recycling
and re-using the fiber boards is of interest in order to reduce the energy consumption
as well as the resources that is needed.
The aim with recycling and reusing the fiber boards is to reduce the raw material
consumption as well as the energy consumption.
In order to reuse the fiber boards, they have to be shredded into smaller pieces. A
binder then needs to be added in order to hold the fibers together. There are several
different types of binders with different properties on the market.
The aim of this thesis is to find a suitable binder for recycled fiber boards. Finding
a suitable binder will includes, the brand, type, and amount of binder that will be
used for the end product. The environmental impact of the recycled product is also
compared to freshly produced fiber board.
Different properties of the fiber boards are then evaluated, such as the mechanical
strength of the boards.
In this thesis different types of binders were tested. These include solid as well
as liquid binders. Smaller prototypes were made in order to evaluate the binders and
some of the samples showed promising results. The result from this thesis can be used
for further research. (Less)
