(Less)

Research question: How do non-clerical employees in a parish within Church of Sweden perceive normative control?
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to contribute to the public debate on normative control with a new empirical perspective, and to investigate how non-clerical employees in Church of Sweden perceive normative control.
Methodology: A qualitative case study has been conducted with eight semi-structured interviews with non-clerical employees within a parish in Church of Sweden. The study’s ontological standpoint has been social constructionistic, and an abductive approach was used.
Theoretical perspectives: Previous research has been presented within the areas of organizational culture, organizational control in general and normative control specifically. Thereafter the study’s theoretical tool, brand-centred control, has been presented.
Result: The results show how the employees in the studied parish ended up in their workplace and how they perceive internal and external expectations. The empirical findings also include a description of the workplace culture, and how present the religion is in it.
Conclusions: That which in theory should be the central part of the normative control in Church of Sweden, the religion, proved to be secondary. Thus the organization as a whole is secondary in relation to the own parish. Instead of normative control originating from a central level in the organization, it is created on a local level. (Less)
