Abstract
This thesis concerns the refugee debate in Denmark. The study is a comparative case study in order to examine different aspects of the refugee debate. The aim of the study is to investigate the different approaches with focus on the reactions to the movement of refugees in 2015 and the war in Ukraine in 2022. The study aims to highlight how the refugees are portrayed in the Danish debate and explore to what degree the claims made by the politicians differ. Moreover, the study investigates the Danish media portrayal of the two cases. The focus of the study is the legislative debates held at the Danish parlia-ment. The two law treatments are both concerning law proposals regarding the refugee status in Denmark.

The samples consist of a total of 22 speeches held by spokespersons who are all repre-senting members of a party. The research is conducted through a mixed – method ap-proach. The study applies a topical analysis. Through the topoi analysis the different ar-guments by the politicians have been identified. Furthermore, the study uses a qualitative content analysis, through the method of open coding which reveals the media focus within the two cases. The analysed sample of the media content consists of a total on 75 articles.
The findings of this study include how the political debate together with the media con-structs a common enemy for the Danish society. The movement of refugees in 2015 led to a debate during 2016, where the refugees are portrayed as a threat to the Danish society. In the case from 2022, the study identifies another threat in form of Russia. This threat of Russia is reinforced through historical references.
Moreover, the study highlights how there is seen a difference in the argumentation regard-ing responsibility, as it differs whether the responsibility is related to a national or global perspective. This study examines the first debates at the legislative process, although it might be relevant for future study to examine all debates of the legislative process. (Less)
