Abstract
In this essay an attempt is made to interpret the landscape at the Scanian estate Torup from two perspectives not commonly used in the study of postmedieval landscapes: the ideological rather than the economical-functional, and the global rather than the local. The landscape is studied through historical maps and images as well as through field observations made during walks in the landscape, and several features are identified which indicate that the landscape was shaped, at least in part, by ideology, which was in turn influenced by global tendencies. Examples of such features include geometric shapes imposed on the landscape, plantation-like farms with worker’s lodgings on display, and the manipulation of lines of sight in order to... (More)

Examples of such features include geometric shapes imposed on the landscape, plantation-like farms with worker’s lodgings on display, and the manipulation of lines of sight in order to emphasise impressions of largeness or exclusivity. The conclusion is thus that ideology significantly influenced the landscape around Torup, and that such perspectives are crucial in order to obtain a more complete understanding of landscapes, but that they must be combined with economic and functionalist perspectives.
