Abstract
Asian Americans are underrepresented in mainstream media and are often absent or portrayed with stereotypical images. Anyone can publicly express their opinions on social media, providing a platform for Asian Americans who have long been on the social margins and are typically reticent to express themselves. Asian Americans' views of themselves and their own culture may be influenced by the content on social media platforms. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the content on these social media platforms. Although there has conducted some research on how Asian Americans use social media to handle identity and representational issues, as well as how they use content creation to construct their identities, further exploration is still needed, especially on humorous content. Therefore, this paper aims to explore how Asian American TikTokers use humor to construct their racial identity and represent themselves through the hashtag #asianamerican. The research found that collective memories of Asian American life and daily experiences of racialization serve as inspiration for comedy creation. Imitation, exaggeration, and satire are the most commonly used comedy techniques in constructing Asian American identities. (Less)
