Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
The purpose of this master thesis is to gain knowledge of carpenters' use of mathematics and inquire whether students enrolled in the VET carpentry believe that mathematics is used in carpentry, and if so which areas of mathematics. The purpose is further to see whether the VET students believe that the Swedish mandatory course in mathematics, matematik 1a, is a justified course in their education.
The empirical data of the study consists of qualitative interviews with carpenters and VET students about their opinions on mathematics in carpentry, and a survey about the use of mathematics in the profession. The empirical data of the study consists of qualitative interviews with carpenters and VET students about their opinions on mathematics in carpentry, and a survey about the use of mathematics in the profession. The data was analyzed based on Bernstein's theories of classification, framing, horizontal and vertical discourse, and recontextualization, as well as D'Ambrosio's theory of ethnomathematics.
The results show that both VET students and carpenters consider arithmetic and parts of geometry to be important, including angles- and area-calculations. Carpenters who computed angles used digital tools, which also played an important role in mathematics in carpentry. The students considered matematik 1a to be a valuable course in VET carpentry; however, they motivated this with the possibility of changing careers in the future. They further explained that it would have been positive to have more carpentry-contextualized mathematics than they now experienced in the mathematics course.
This is discussed based on the new curriculum for matematik 1a 21/22 with focus on how mathematics teachers need to recontextualize the new course, and preferably cooperate with vocational teachers to conduct an education relevant to vocational students. (Less)
