- Abstract
- After many years since the ratification of the Convention of the Right of the Child, it was eventually incorporated into Swedish law in 2020. One of the fundamental articles of the convention is children’s right to participate in matters concerning them. Oftentimes, children’s perspectives and need for inclusion are overlooked and non-prioritised. Through interviews with planners about two chosen planning processes in two different municipalities, the methods and attitudes towards children’s participation can be reflected on. This essay suggests that children’s lacking participation in today’s urban planning is due to vague and diffuse legislation, leading to a lack of guidance in working with and for children’s interests. Challenges to children’s inclusion include lacking guidance, as well as lacking knowledge among planners, leading to uncertainty and inaction on the behalf of planners. In order to improve children’s participation in the future, planners must improve their knowledge and routines regarding the inclusion of children, but also be more daring in their approaches. (Less)
