Abstract
This thesis project was done in collaboration with ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems, and aims to increase efficiency in the design of the guiding tracks for overhead sectional doors. Withstanding wind and structural loads, while being easily installed and manufactured are some of the key aspects being considered, while maintaining the aim of reducing costs and material used. Using finite element analysis and design for assembly and manufacture, the project aims to provide a basis for ASSA ABLOY to decide on further development of the guiding tracks. The methodology used in the report is based on the Ulrich and Eppinger method for product development, and several areas of improvement on the current design are found. In summary, the results show... (More)
This thesis project was done in collaboration with ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems, and aims to increase efficiency in the design of the guiding tracks for overhead sectional doors. In summary, the results show that similar or better performance can be achieved with less material, while manufacturing costs can be significantly reduced. The report considers current manufacturing capabilities and incorporates manufacturing method and the assembly analysis formulated by Boothroyd, Dewhurst and Knight to reduce the start-up and per part cost of manufacture and assembly. Furthermore, the report suggests points of future development, and finds additional areas of the overhead sectional doors that would impact wind resistance and compliance. (Less)
