Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine drug availability and social risk- and safety factors regarding adolescents' drug use. The method used for this study was a survey, with 140 students from Helsingborg's high schools as respondents, allowing a quantitative analysis. The theory used in this study was Albert Bandura's social learning theory. Previous research shows that there are social risk factors, as well as social safety factors concerning drug use among adolescents. Former studies show that there is a rise in adolescent drug use in Sweden, the significance of similar studies is therefore up-to-date. Research shows that 77 percent of the youth both in the USA and Spain, who are in the market of buying drugs, use social media to do... (More)

Previous research shows that there are social risk factors, as well as social safety factors concerning drug use among adolescents. Former studies show that there is a rise in adolescent drug use in Sweden, the significance of similar studies is therefore up-to-date. Research shows that 77 percent of the youth both in the USA and Spain, who are in the market of buying drugs, use social media to do so. These studies underline the importance of young people's social network acting as a safety net to drug use supporting the young people's attitudes and decision-making towards using drugs. Our results show that nearly 84 percent of the students who stated they had a safe relationship with their parents had not tried any drugs.
Meanwhile the respondents who had tried drugs to a greater extent stated a neutral or less than good relationship with their parents. The results also show that even though not all of the adolescents have tried drugs, the majority of the respondents who had a perception in the question find the drug market very accessible. A risk factor that appears in this study is that nearly 61 percent of the adolescents who have tried drugs also had been exposed via their friends and family. (Less)
