Abstract (Swedish)

(More)

(Less)
Abstract
A qualitative study about store managers’ role in organizational change. This study aims to further nuance the role of middle managers in organizational change by studying how the middle managers themself perceive this role, as well what it implies. To answer this the following research question was formulated: How do store managers perceive their role in organizational change?

In order to address our research question, a qualitative case study has been conducted on seven store managers who hold the position of middle manager. Through semi-structured interviews, we have obtained their interpretations and experiences of their role, which is at the basis of our work.

The literature review takes its basis in existing theories on organizational change, both in broad and middle managers’ particular role within them. Furthermore, identity is used as a perspective to bring nuance to this field. The study finds that middle managers perceive their role in an organizational change like a parent with the goal of creating safety and protecting their employees. Filtering emotions and information is portrayed as a core aspect of this. The parental role, through the eyes of identity, may suggest a stronger identification with the employees rather than the upper management. Furthermore it is argued that there is an individual aspect connected to the middle managers’ identity or self-perception that appears to be part of how and to what extent the middle managers filter.
