- Abstract
- This is a study that aims to study the impact of socio-economic structures on spatial inequality with a focus on public spaces in particular. The study takes place in two of Kroksbäck's apartment buildings, MKB's area and HSB's area, where MKB constitutes the central part of the study. The three research questions of the paper are: How do control and conflicts of interest manifest themselves around public spaces in Kroksbäck? How can spatial inequalities be identified on the basis of public spaces in Kroksbäck and what connections are there between spatial inequalities and socio-economic structures? To what extent and in what ways do planning actors take the socio-economic structures of Kroksbäck into account when planning the area in... (More)

How can spatial inequalities be identified on the basis of public spaces in Kroksbäck and what connections are there between spatial inequalities and socio-economic structures? To what extent and in what ways do planning actors take the socio-economic structures of Kroksbäck into account when planning the area in general and public spaces in particular? The empirical data collected through interviews, document analysis and observations. It has been interpreted based on a theoretical framework, which in turn is based on research by Henri Lefebvre and Susan Fainstein, among others. Where public spaces based on control, conflict and accessibility have been central topics together with spatial inequality and the impact of socio-economic structures on public spaces and planning. The analysis has been structured under the three main categories of Control and Conflict, Accessibility and the Impact of Socioeconomic Structures on Spatial Inequality, a structure that is consistent throughout the project. The results of the thesis clarify, among other things, a credible causal relationship between Kroksbäck's socio-economic structures and factors linked to public spaces and the spatial inequality in the area. And that there are conflicts of interest in public spaces that risk greatly decimating the public aspects. (Less)
