Abstract
This thesis examines the dynamics and impact of strategic cross-sector partnerships between businesses and non-governmental organisations, focusing on how these collaborations create shared value. The thesis looks at several strategic cross-sector partnerships involving large organisations such as IKEA, Hapag-Lloyd, UNICEF, and WWF to understand the unique characteristics that influence these collaborations to ultimately create shared value. Utilising qualitative methods, including semi-structured interviews, this thesis critically examines existing theoretical frameworks on strategic cross-sector partnerships to consider their relevance in today's world. The insights gained from the empirical data will thus contribute to existing knowledge. The findings highlight the importance of key attributes in these strategic cross-sector partnerships for addressing complex challenges such as sustainability and simultaneously promoting business growth, and societal benefit. However, they also show that theoretical frameworks need to be constantly re-evaluated in order to remain relevant. Consequently, this work contributes to the academic and practical understanding of strategic cross-sector partnerships by providing insights into their structures, strategies, and dynamics to fill the gap between theory and practical application that has emerged over the decades.
