Abstract
This paper analyzes the set of political skills that middle managers use to navigate the aerospace industry. The current study considers Mintzberg’s (1985), Ferris et al.’s (2007), and Treadway et al.’s (2005) conceptualization of organizations as political arenas, will, and skills. Thus, it constitutes a theoretical base to create a new tailored political skills framework that could help aerospace middle managers deal with their daily tasks and advance in their careers. We hypothesize that the set of political skills within our framework differs from the general ones, by having social astuteness, interpersonal influence, and networking as political skills and hard skills correlated at the core. The main difference between Ferris et al.'s... (More)
This paper analyzes the set of political skills that middle managers use to navigate the aerospace industry. The main difference between Ferris et al.'s (2007) proposed political skills is the theorization of the minor influence of apparent sincerity on aerospace middle management. Moreover, we recognize international institutions in the aerospace industry as influencing the development in this area, which complements Mintzberg's (1985) and Bolman & Deal’s (2017) concept of organizational politics. As the main output of the use of political skills, we theorize a peculiar impact on aerospace middle management career advancement. Regarding the methodology, the research design of this study is qualitative with a deductive approach. Data gathered through interviews with different middle managers working for different European companies in the sector validate the suggested new framework and its hypotheses. This paper’s goal is to contribute to a clearer understanding of the use of political skills in a defined environment. Furthermore, the aim is to build a new foundation for further theoretical development in the political skills field. Considering its limitations, the base for future research that this exploratory study offers is also discussed. (Less)
