(2024) LAMP72 20241Malmö Academy of Music
- Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
- Abstract
- During our music teacher training programme at Malmö Academy of Music, we have encountered a problem with interpretable grading criteria and equivalent assessment. We have chosen to focus on the grading criterion personal expression in the upper secondary school singing course (Instrument eller sång 1), because we have singing as our main instrument. We have been taught that the Swedish school mission is equivalent education and assessment. The purpose of this thesis is to see how vocal teachers in upper secondary school define personal expression and how they carry out equivalent assessment within the grading criteria personal expression. We have conducted five semistructured interviews, which were partially based on an assessment video.... (More)

We have been taught that the Swedish school mission is equivalent education and assessment. The purpose of this thesis is to see how vocal teachers in upper secondary school define personal expression and how they carry out equivalent assessment within the grading criteria personal expression. We have conducted five semistructured interviews, which were partially based on an assessment video. The result shows that informants define personal expression as credibility, expression in the body language, express something through singing and active choices regarding the singing performance. The informants also mentioned the importance of following the student's progression in the choice of sound and expression. The informants say that their workplaces carry out equivalent assessment through co-assessment, by providing the same conditions and offering the same tools for their students as well as creating clear frameworks around what should be included and achieved in education. When assessing personal expression it is easy to become subjective, but in order to achieve an equal assessment objectivity should be striven for. The term personal expression is difficult to interpret, which makes assessment difficult and thus affects equivalent assessment. Our conclusion includes that the lack of a common definition of personal expression leads to the concept being multifaceted and difficult to interpret, which makes assessment of personal expression difficult and thus affects equivalence. We believe that a commentary material for the courses in Instruments or singing can be helpful when assessing personal expression. (Less)
