Research Question: How do male and female employees within a male-dominated industry perceive gender diversity management?
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to understand how men and women in a male-dominated STEM industry perceive gender diversity management, and how these perceptions affect their sense of inclusion, taking a nuanced view of inclusion by using the lens peripheral inclusion.
Methodology: This qualitative research is based on the interpretive tradition and an abductive approach where a case study was conducted. In order to collect empirical material, 13 semi-structured interviews were conducted with male and female employees of a Swedish male-dominated Mining Engineering company.
Theoretical Perspective: The theoretical perspective is comprised of three main concepts: gender diversity management, the male-dominated STEM domain, and inclusion.
Contribution: The study contributes to gender diversity management literature by delving into perceptions of the related initiatives. Subsequently, we further develop the understanding of how these perceptions impact the inclusion of both the majority and minority groups in male-dominated industries by adding to the concept of peripheral inclusion.
Keywords: Gender diversity management, male-dominated industry, STEM, gender inclusion, peripheral inclusion (Less)
