Abstract
Managing work and other responsibilities while being efficient and open to work changes has become increasingly difficult for employees. There is even more pressure on social workers, or more specifically, mental health workers given the nature of their job which not only includes working with clients but also making the decision to reject some individuals due to a packed schedule. This study aimed to investigate whether psychological flexibility mediates and whether creativity moderates the relationship between job crafting and the outcomes burnout and work engagement of mental health sector employees in Malaysia (N = 124). A cross-sectional survey design was used along with mediation (psychological flexibility) and moderation analyses (creativity). The results revealed that psychological flexibility fully mediated the relationship between job crafting and burnout and partially mediated the relationship between job crafting and engagement. All dimensions of creativity negatively moderated the relationship between job crafting and burnout. Only creative flexibility and creative elaboration were found to positively moderate the relationship between job crafting and work engagement. The findings contribute to the literature on expanding the knowledge regarding the mediators and moderators of the association between job crafting and outcome variables and the benefits of engaging in job crafting which could lead to greater flexibility, and ultimately greater engagement and lower burnout.
Additionally, limitations and future directions are discussed. (Less)
